The weather's warmer. The trees are in leaf. Spring festivals are in full swing. And summer crowds haven't yet arrived.
No wonder so many folks consider May one of the best times to visit the Smokies.
See for yourself. Here are 5 fun ways to experience May in the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge area.
There's never a bad time to visit the park, but May is especially nice. Everything's lush and green. And some of the Smokies' famous flowering shrubs are just beginning to bloom.
Hike anywhere in the lower elevations to view vivid flame azaleas with their brilliant orange blossoms. Plus, take popular, paved Laurel Falls Trail – 2.6 miles roundtrip – to see mountain laurels covered with delicate white-pink flowers. While you're at it, you'll get to visit a spectacular 80-foot waterfall.
Take to the open air most Thursdays – Sundays for live music at Anakeesta theme park. From 12pm – 3pm each day, you can sing along (or hum, if you prefer) with a wide variety of amazing talent.
Cody Bauer Duo, Josh Gilbert Band, Midnight Run, Sara Collins, Tennessee Travelers, Rebel Mountain Railroad, and Shaun Abbott are already slated for the month of May.
Also, local legends including one-man-band Hendry Bombat take the stage with their own special sound. Best of all, this foot-stompin' fun is free with general admission.
Love everything retro? You won't want to miss the Smoky Mountain Antique Toy and Pedal Car Show at the Music Road Resort in Pigeon Forge. Slated for mid-May, this annual event showcases more than 100 of America's finest antique toy and pedal cars plus assorted vintage memorabilia. Admission and parking are free, and an exciting auction (free to the public) tops off the weeklong event.
Keen for quilts and quilting? You're in luck. For 5 days in early May, Pigeon Forge's famed LeConte Center gathers quilters from across the county for daily hands-on classes plus a huge public show with row after row of beautiful hand-crafted quilts.
Any avid anglers in your family? Bring them to the LeConte Center the third weekend in May for the Catapalooza Catfishing Expo. For a modest admission charge (free for kids 12 and under with a paying adult), you'll get to view all the latest gear and get all the latest info from the world of professional catfishing.
