Here in the Tennessee Smokies, Halloween is more than a day. It's a whole magical season, ideal for families with children. Visit anytime through October 31 – and even a little beyond – to scare up fun-filled activities like these:
Do your youngster love jack-o-lanterns? They'll be in seventh heaven at Dollywood's Great Pumpkin LumiNights, part of the famous theme park's annual Harvest Festival.
If you're visiting anytime between September 24 and October 30, be sure to take the family on an evening tour of Dollywood's four LumiNights locations: Craftsman's Valley, Timber Canyon, Wilderness Pass, and Wildlife Grove.
Here you'll find:
In Wildwood Grove, you'll discover Dolly's Wildwood Tree in all its autumn glory. Stroll through the lovely fall landscape, admire the fresh crop of jack-o-lantern "sunflowers," and listen as Dolly narrates the fascinating story of Wildwood's autumn transformation.
Tickets for LumiNights / Harvest Festival dates sell out fast, so be sure to reserve yours soon.
Traveling with little ones in tow? Come to the Pigeon Forge Community Center (170 Community Center Drive) on Thursday, October 28, for safe, scare-free trick-or-treating and much more. Local vendors will have plenty of candy on hand to tickle the kiddos' taste buds. Plus, there'll be live entertainment, cool interactive activities, eye-popping Halloween displays, and even a family-friendly haunted house. All 100% free to the public.
Will you be in the Smokies on Halloween day, Sunday, October 31? Bring the family to Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies Plaza at 88 River Road in downtown Gatlinburg between 1 and 5 p.m. for a full line-up of child-safe festivities. Your youngsters will enjoy free Halloween candy, meet colorful costumed characters, and compete in kid-pleasing contests. Plus, the Gatlinburg Police Department will be on hand to teach children about trick-or-treat safety.
Wondering what to do on Halloween night? Visit The Island at Pigeon Forge (131 The Island Drive) between 5 and 8 p.m. for a free family event featuring safe trick-or-treating, photo ops, and assorted activities.
Be sure to dress up in your favorite Halloween costume. Why? Well, just for fun. And also because every costumed guest will qualify for a super-saver $5 pass for a full 48 hours of unlimited rides. (If you forget to bring costumes along on your trip to the Smokies, no worries. You can always scare some up at Halloween Express in Pigeon Forge or Party City in Sevierville.)
After the Halloween party's over, stick around to watch The Island's famous fountain display, with its stunning interplay of water and light sparkling in the starlit night. It's a fitting end to a fantastic family experience.
