In 1973 a young singer-songwriter named Dolly Parton penned a hauntingly beautiful ballad about a bittersweet breakup. Released on March 18, 1974, “I Will Always Love You” quickly soared to the top spot in the Billboard list of Hot Country Songs. Along with Parton's signature tune, “Jolene,” it established the youthful artist as one of country music's all-time greats.
This year “I Will Always Love You” turns 50. And, to commemorate that momentous milestone, Dollywood plans a festive celebration for March 11 through April 8. Timed to coincide with the kickoff of Dollywood's 2023 season, the gala jubilee will honor Dolly's iconic status as a country music legend. Beyond that, it will celebrate “the art of songwriting and the stories behind the songs,” according to Dollywood sources.
That means music will ring through the mountain air throughout the four-week festival. Headline performances across the park will feature noted singers/songwriters. Plus, Dollywood's Showstreet Palace Theater will host the Songwriters' Showcase, spotlighting a number of up-and-coming artists.
Bottom line? You'll enjoy some of the best singing, strumming, and picking available anywhere in America today. You'll be tapping your toes in no time!
Special park décor will accentuate the musical theme. Plus, vendors and eateries will offer delicious fare from the Southern culinary tradition.
It's certain to be an unforgettable experience for the entire family. And it's all inspired by one legendary song, the plaintive ballad Dolly wrote for her beloved musical partner, Porter Waggoner, when she left to launch her solo career. “I Will Always Love You” went on to become a breakout hit for Dolly. And 18 years later, in 1992, it became a Billboard #1 blockbuster for Whitney Houston, who turned it into a soaring anthem with blues, jazz, and Gospel overtones.
Now it's the impetus behind the spectacular spring start of Dollywood's biggest season ever, which will include 15 additional operating days interspersed throughout 2023.
This spring, Dollywood also plans to launch its new $25-million Big Bear Mountain Roller Coaster, the largest single attraction investment in the theme park's history.
At 3,990 feet long, the thrilling two-minute ride will rocket through the scenic hills surrounding Dollywood's Wildwood Grove. Along the way, it will careen around twists and turns, hurtle through mountain tunnels, and soar over multiple hilltops. But not to worry – like everything else at Dollywood, the ride is family-friendly. In fact, the height requirement (39 inches) gives younger kids a chance to enjoy the exciting experience.
